Economic Initiatives

Initiatives to improve economic development in the communities where we work include:

INCOME GENERATION

Baraka Shea Butter works with Amina Yussef, a local development practitioner, to train the women’s groups on income generation activities. The women receive training on basic micro business strategy and economics, as well as various activities that will allow them to generate income, often by making products (e.g. soap, bow-fruit etc.) to sell at the local market. By doing so, the women not only receive valuable training but can add additional income to their household using the skills they have developed.

MICRO-CREDIT SUPPORT

We encourage our producers to become involved with organizations and projects that can provide micro-credit support to their income generation and development efforts. By supporting local micro-credit projects where possible, we contribute capital that can be used for lending to provide capacity development support. It also enables training for the organizations so they can take advantage of other opportunities to provide assistance and support.

KONJEI WOMEN'S ENTERPRISE CENTRE AND COMMUNITY WATER PROJECT

The hard-working women of Konjei will soon have a new enterprise centre to support their income generation efforts and the entire community will have a new water well (the water in the old one tasted salty). Thanks to all of our customers and their ongoing support Baraka has been able to commit to the construction of a Women’s Enterprise Centre and Community Water Well for Konjei. We don’t have all the financing in place yet so will be dedicating all the tips and Dignity of Income contributions Women in remote communities face so many challenges when it comes to trying to generate income. They all resort to many different activities and projects, often driven by seasons and economic demand (e.g., when we are producing shea butter that is their focus. We try to avoid conflicts with key planting, harvesting and other activities.)
