Kombo Muscle Balm with Red Palm and Essential Oils
The Kombo Tree is a natural shade tree in Ghana’s Cocoa Forests. The butter, made from the seed/nut in the centre of the fruit, has been used traditionally for pain relief for joints and muscles and to relieve pain accelerate healing of burns and skin wounds.
Kombo Butter Muscle Balm uses 100% natural hand-crafted ingredients, combining the benefits of Kombo Butter, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter, along with Ginger Powder and Pepper Powder. Peppermint or other essential oils can be added as well.
Red Palm Oil is great in body butters and skin and hair formulations, bringing many benefits and so easy to work with.
And no, using it doesn’t mean you are destroying rainforest and obliterating Orangutans, especially when you use Baraka Red Palm Oil, sustainably produced and sourced from small scale farmers in Ghana. Check this blog if you want more detail: Why Baraka Palm Oil is Sustainable.
This recipe uses equal amounts of Red Palm Oil and Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter and Kombo Butter. Feel free to experiment by using more of some and less of others.
It is a simple 4 ingredient recipe with a couple of optional ingredients, Baraka Cocoa Powder and an essential oil of your choice. Process is to measure, melt, cool, whip and package.
HOW TO MAKE OUR KOMBO MUSCLE BALM WITH RED PALM BODY BUTTER
DIRECTIONS
- Weigh out the butters and oils and put in a double boiler to melt.
- When melted strain into a cooling dish that you can use to whip the mixture in after it solidifies.
- Leave it to cool (you can put it in the fridge if you want, but stir frequently or it will be too hard on the outside and still liquid in the centre.
- If using cocoa, moringa or other powders or essential oils add them in as you start to mix.
- Whip until it is a light, fluffy consistency (more whipping will give you a softer product (more air whipped in) that will need more containers to hold it all.
- Put it into containers. I like to put it into a plastic bag, remove the air and cut a corner off the bottom of the bag and squeeze it into containers, but some like to simply spoon it in.
- Put covers on containers, label and use (or give away, or sell)

CAUTIONS WHEN USING RED PALM OIL
While Red Palm Oil has many amazing properties that will make your hair and skin happy, it may make you sad if you don’t take care of the colour. It can stain sheets and clothes (fortunately it absorbs quickly and the very things that give it the colour (carotenoids) are powerful protection against UV Rays). If you have light hair you should test it in a small area and avoid leaving it on your hair for an extended period.
