DirectionsSTEP 1: Prepare your infused olive oil first! Combine 1 cup Arnica Montana flowers, 1/2 cup Comfrey leaves, & 1/4 cup White Willow Bark in a wide mouth mason jar. Cover with Extra Virgin Olive Oil or carrier oil of choice (there should be enough olive oil to cover the dried herbs by 1 inch). You can prepare your infusion a few different ways: Warm Infusion (takes approx. 4-6 weeks) Tightly cover your jar of dried herbs & oil & place in a dark location such as cupboard. Allow to sit for 4-6 weeks, gently shaking or stirring the jar every few weeks. Once 4-6 weeks has passed, line a wire strainer with muslin cloth & pour the mixture through the cloth & into a second jar. Squeeze the muslin cloth tightly to strain the herbs of as much oil as properly (once fully strained the herbs can be thrown away). Place the lid on the second jar with the infused oil & label with date, type of oil, & type of herbs. |
Heat Infusion (4-8 hours): This can be done a number of ways as well but we feel most people prefer the stove top method for a heat infusion as it can be done fairly quickly! Follow the directions for making herb-infused oils in the warm-infusion method above.
Once your herbs and oils have been combined in your jar and sealed, place the jar in a saucepan or pot that has been filled about 1/4 full of water.
Allow the jars to simmer for 4-8 hours, or more, & carefully monitor the water level in the pot. If the water gets low, carefully add more hot water to the pan, adding it slowly so that water doesn’t splash into the oil & herb mixture.
When time is up, remove the jar from the saucepan & allow it to cool before straining. Once it is cooled off, follow the directions in the warm-infusion method above to strain & bottle your mixture.
We chose to make a double infusion for this recipe so after 5 hours passed, we strained the old herbs out of the oil & added new herbs into the mixture, then heat infused the oil & new herbs for another 5 hours. This creates a stronger infused oil.
STEP 2:Add 3 ounces of Kombo Butter to a double boiler & melt thoroughly. Once melted, remove from heat & stir in 2 ounces of your herbal infused oil. Then, add in 2 tablespoons of beeswax & return to double boiler. Stir frequently & allow beeswax to melt fully. |

STEP 3:Now, add your essential oils blend! We wanted a blend that would be warming for sore muscles so we chose Peppermint essential oil, Clove Bud essential oil, Black Pepper essential oil, Ginger Root CO2, & Cinnamon essential oil. Make sure you read the directions on your essential oil blends for the maximum recommended topical dilution. For example, we only used 2 drops of Cinnamon in this ENTIRE recipe & it is quite strong. Once you have thoroughly blended in your essential oils you can begin pouring OR for a cooling then warming sensation, add in 1 teaspoon of Menthol crystals to your blend & allow to melt. |
