Handmade.  Small Batch.  What do they really mean when it comes to Shea Butter?

They mean a lot, when you realize that the alternative to handmade shea butter is mechanically processed and chemically extracted!  Yuck!

To learn more on this, read How to Know if Handmade Shea Butter is Best.

Handmade shea butter doesn’t use chemicals or solvents and maximizes income for rural women.

But it isn’t just because it is processed without using harmful chemicals and solvents that handmade shea butter is best.

Here are our top ten reasons why you should only use handmade shea butter on your skin and for the products you make.

TOP TEN REASONS TO USE HANDMADE SHEA BUTTER

  1. No chemicals and solvents used in making it
  2. All the traditional goodness remains
  3. Handmade in small batches
  4. Maximizes income for hardworking women
  5. Less carbon/climate change impact
  6. Supports local women, not outside investors
  7. Ensures traditional use benefits not destroyed by chemicals and solvents
  8. Preserves culture and tradition
  9. It is just better for you, your skin, your products and the environment
  10. Seriously? Traditionally made by hand vs chemicals and solvents. What choice is there?

85% of all shea butter is mechanically processed using chemicals and solvents to extract the oils and convert them into shea butter.  It is sold as raw, unrefined shea butter so you really need to do your homework to make sure what you are getting and using on your skin.

If you want to be sure you are only using handmade shea butter, you will need to find a supplier you trust who can demonstrate that the shea butter they are providing is handmade in small batches.  If your supplier can’t easily demonstrate this, they likely don’t know where their shea butter comes from and it is unlikely it is handmade.

Many resellers of shea butter simply purchase the least expensive and easiest to get shea butter without knowing how it is made.
