Breastfeeding is a beautiful experience, a time where mama and baby can truly bond. It is natural and pure (like handmade shea butter) and so important. Thankfully Western society is increasingly embracing it as natural, loving and publicly acceptable.

However, it isn’t always as easy as one may think. It’s a learning process, which can result in cracked, sore, and dry nipples for mom.

The answer? A good, natural nipple cream.

Just as important as your diet while breastfeeding, so is the products you put on your skin. Since baby may ingest leftover nipple cream (no matter how hard you try to wipe it off pre-breastfeeding), it is ideal to use something that is all natural.

What better way to ensure that your nipple cream is all-natural and safe for baby than to make it yourself? And if you’re reading this and you aren’t a new mom, chances are you know someone who is… and this would be a great and incredibly appreciated DIY gift!

DIY Natural Nipple Cream

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup Calendula
  • 1/4 cup Marshmallow Root
  • 1 cup Olive oil and/or Coconut oil
  • 1/8 cup Beeswax
  • 2 Tbsp Baraka Shea Butter

Directions:

  1. Scoop herbs into a glass jar and pour oil on top. Make sure there is at least one inch gap between the mixture and top of the jar. Screw lid on tightly.
  2. Set out a medium size slow cooker and line the bottom with a thick hand towel. Place the jar inside and fill the slow cooker with water up to the level of the oil in the jar, but keep the water level below the lid.
  3. Turn the slow cooker on the “warm” setting and leave it on for 3 to 5 days, partially covered. Add more water into the cooker when necessary.
  4. After 3 to 5 days, remove the oil infusion from the cooker and let it cool a little. Strain the oil through a fine sieve and/or cheesecloth into a small stainless steel sauce pan. Squeeze with your hands or use the back of a spoon to release the finished oil. Throw the used herbs away.
  5. Add beeswax and shea butter into the sauce pan and turn heat on low. Stir until wax and butter has melted. Pour the mixture into glass jars or tins. Allow them to cool completely before putting the lids on. Date and label the nipple cream. Keep them in a cool, dry and dark spot. Will keep for several months.

Since these ingredients are safe and natural, there is no harm feared for your little one. Lather it on and feel the moisture in between feedings, especially at night when you sleep. Enjoy this beautiful time with your baby, and use these easy recipes to soothe any discomfort you may experience afterwards.
