The Complete Series Overview

How Do I Get Started Doing DIY Skincare?

Congratulations! You are taking control of what goes on your skin—the body's largest organ. Making your own skincare products is healthier, more cost-effective, and genuinely fun. Let's explore how to begin your DIY skincare journey with confidence.

Begin with the Right Mindset

First and foremost, approach DIY skincare with a sense of adventure and wonder. Remember that when working with pure, natural ingredients and keeping recipes simple, you'll have both success and enjoyment. There's no need for highly refined ingredients—the refining process often uses bleaches and chemicals to remove natural scents and colors, potentially eliminating beneficial properties in the process.

Keep It Simple

As a beginner, simplicity is your friend:

  • Avoid complicated recipes with long ingredient lists

  • Skip ingredients you can't pronounce

  • Start with 2-3 ingredient formulations

  • Master the basics before trying complex techniques

I made my first DIY skincare product by melting together equal amounts of shea butter, cocoa butter, kombo butter and coconut oil in a double boiler and then using a fork to froth it a bit as it cooled.

Then I realized I would like an essential oil so I warmed it to near melting and added a few drops of lavender essential oil and frothed it again. Worked perfect. Amazing skincare benefits, smelled wonderful, saved me money and so satisfying!

I could have used any 2 or 3 of the ingredients instead of all four. If you look at ingredient properties below you can literally formulate your own body butter to give you the benefits you want and the texture you prefer.

You can do it! Experiment. With great ingredients you literally can't go wrong.

But, if you want more direction, read on - I have included a few simple starter recipes.

Choose Ingredients Thoughtfully

When selecting ingredients, consider both their beneficial properties and their ethical sourcing:

Basic Whipped Body Butter

Introduction

Ā This luxurious whipped body butter melts on contact with your skin, providing deep hydration without any greasy residue. Made with just a few natural ingredients, it's incredibly easy to create at home.

Benefits

  • Shea Butter: Rich in vitamins A, E, and F, provides intense moisture, soothes skin, and has anti-inflammatory properties

  • Coconut Oil: Contains medium-chain fatty acids that help protect skin against damage and infection while providing deep hydration

What This Recipe Helps With:

  • Dry Skin: The combination of shea butter and coconut oil creates a moisture barrier that helps heal and prevent dry, cracked skin.

  • Eczema & Psoriasis: The anti-inflammatory properties of shea butter can help soothe irritated skin conditions and reduce flare-ups.

  • Aging Skin: Vitamin E and other antioxidants help fight free radical damage and promote cell regeneration for healthier-looking skin.

  • Stretch Marks: Regular application can improve skin elasticity and may help reduce the appearance of stretch marks over time.

How to make it

Ā This body butter requires just two main ingredients melted together and whipped to create a cloud-like texture that absorbs beautifully into the skin.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (4 oz / 113g) Shea Butter

  • 1/4 cup (2 oz / 57g) Coconut Oil

  • Optional: 10-15 drops of essential oil of choice

Essential Oils

  • Lavender: Promotes relaxation and soothes skin irritation

  • Frankincense: Rejuvenates skin and reduces appearance of scars

  • Sweet Orange: Uplifting scent and promotes collagen production

  • Ylang Ylang: Balances skin's oil production and has a calming floral scent

Essential Oils to Avoid

  • Citrus oils (when used in high concentrations): Can cause photosensitivity when skin is exposed to sunlight

  • Cinnamon, Clove, and Oregano: These oils can be irritating to sensitive skin and should be used in very small amounts or avoided

Instructions

  1. Melt shea butter and coconut oil together using a double boiler on low heat

  2. Remove from heat once fully melted

  3. Add essential oils if desired

  4. Allow to cool until the mixture begins to solidify at the edges (placing in refrigerator for 15-20 minutes helps)

  5. Whip with a hand mixer until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes)

  6. Transfer to a clean jar

How to use and store
Apply to clean, slightly damp skin for best absorption. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months; refrigeration in hot weather will prevent melting but may alter the whipped texture.

Customization & Variations
Customize your body butter by adding 1 tablespoon of argan oil for extra nourishment, or substitute cocoa butter for some of the shea butter for a chocolate-scented variation. For sensitive skin, leave out the essential oils completely.

Why make this
Commercial moisturizers often contain preservatives, synthetic fragrances, and other chemicals that can irritate skin. This natural alternative gives you complete control over the ingredients while providing superior hydration.

  • Cold Sores: The antimicrobial properties of coconut oil and soothing effects of shea butter can help with healing and prevention.

  • Aging Around Mouth: Regular use helps keep the delicate skin around the lips hydrated and may reduce fine lines.

How to make it

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon (0.5 oz / 14g) Beeswax or Candelilla Wax (vegan option)

  • Sweet Orange: Offers a pleasant citrus scent and natural flavor

  • Vanilla: Creates a sweet, comforting scent and flavor

  • Tea Tree (just 1 drop): Provides antimicrobial properties for healing

Essential Oils to Avoid

  • Cinnamon and Clove: Can cause burning sensation on sensitive lip tissue

  • Wintergreen: Contains methyl salicylate which can be toxic if accidentally ingested

  2. Remove from heat and add essential oils if using

  3. Quickly pour into lip balm tubes or small containers

  4. Allow to cool completely before capping

How to use and store
Apply as needed throughout the day to maintain hydration. Store at room temperature for up to a year; may soften in hot weather but can be refrigerated to solidify.

Customization & Variations
Add 1/4 teaspoon of honey for added healing properties, a pinch of cinnamon for a natural lip plumper, or a small amount of beetroot powder for a subtle tint. Adjust the wax-to-oil ratio for different levels of firmness depending on your climate.

  2. Shake well to mix

  3. Apply a small amount to damp or dry hair as needed

How to use and store
Apply a small amount (2-5 drops for short to medium hair, 5-10 for long hair) to damp hair before styling, or to dry hair to tame frizz and add shine. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months.

Customization & Variations
For thicker hair, add 1/2 tablespoon of castor oil for extra moisture; for fine hair, replace some of the coconut oil with lighter jojoba oil. For a stimulating scalp treatment, add 2-3 drops of peppermint and rosemary essential oils.

Why make this
Commercial hair products often contain silicones that provide temporary shine but build up over time. This natural oil blend actually nourishes hair from within, improving its health with every application.

Tips for DIY Success

  • Always start with clean tools and work surfaces

  • Measure ingredients by weight rather than volume for consistency

  • Take notes on each recipe you make so you can replicate or adjust

  • Store products properly—many natural formulations do better in cool, dark places

  • Natural products typically have shorter shelf lives than commercial ones (usually 3-6 months)

  • Consider adding vitamin E oil (tocopherol) as a natural preservative to extend shelf life

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using too many ingredients in one product

  • Not allowing mixtures to properly cool before whipping

  • Contaminating products with wet or unclean hands

  • Expecting natural products to behave exactly like commercial ones

  • Using ingredients past their expiration dates

  • Adding too much essential oil (can cause skin irritation)
