Handmade soap is Better, Better, Better, Better and Better! Works Better. Better for you. Better for the planet. Better for local economies because it supports artisans and small businesses. And, when it uses Baraka Shea Butter, every bar provides Better support to hard working women in northern Ghana.

Believe it or not, most consumers have never used true handmade soap. If you are one of the majority read on, you may be surprised. If you are an avid handmade soap advocate or creator you may still find this post quite interesting.

Run to any supermarket, pharmacy, or drug-store, and you will find a large aisle lined with skincare products, specifically soap. When you pick up any bar or bottle, the last thing you may be doing is looking at its ingredient list.  But, if you care for your skin’s health, you should.

But the truth is that these commercial soaps are often made with harsh detergents and chemicals that actually irritate, dry, and harm your skin.

When you purchase handmade soap from a trusted supplier or creator, you can be sure that their products are typically made with wholesome ingredients, like coconut or shea butter. These ingredients are rich in moisture, and can alleviate many skin ailments or conditions.

It is known that commercial soapmakers remove glycerin (the humectant that attracts moisture to the skin) from their soaps, which can contribute to the dryness or irritation you may experience from store-bought products.

The removed glycerin is then manufactured into the supplier’s other products (such as lotions and creams). Meanwhile, handmade soap produces glycerin naturally, and it’s one of the many reasons we love it! Moisture, moisture, moisture!

Lastly, we often hear the concern about lye being used in the handmade soap-making processes.

It’s important to realize that properly made handmade soap. Once the lye and oils emulsify, the saponification process begins. This process turns the lye and oil into soap.  We work with many soapmakers and I am constantly amazed at their level of professionalism and the quality of their products.  Poorly made soap gets chased from the market quickly.

Now besides all of this, each handmade soap is also unique. It can be created and crafted to your liking, whereas, commercial soaps are similar and factory-created. Not to the mention, the soap-making process is a craft done by a passionate and skilled artisan.

Your support allows them to keep creating natural and beautiful soaps, that provide many health benefits to you and local economies! And, when they use Baraka Shea Butter in their soap you directly support hard-working women in northern Ghana every time you wash your hands!
