Building the Perfect Night Skincare Routine

[POSTED ON: 14th September 2019]

After a long busy day, you might be tempted to just skip any form of skincare and simply rely on some beauty rest instead. However, you might want to think twice before heading straight to bed, as leading dermatologist Dr. Joshua Zeichner stresses that your nighttime facial routine is more important than your morning regimen. Here’s why and how you should practice a proper nighttime skincare routine:

Why We Need It

Since our daily lives are filled with hectic activities like working and commuting, our skin will unavoidably collect oil, dirt, and debris throughout the day. If we neglect our skin in the evening, all that bacteria and pollution will end up clogging our pores, which can easily result in all types of skin problems, such as breakouts and pigmentation. By curating a streamlined night skincare routine, not only will you purify your skin, but you will give it a nice treat as well.

How to Do It

Step 1: Wash Your Face

The first step to freeing your skin from the impurities accumulated throughout the day is to incorporate a gentle facial cleanser into your night skincare routine. You might have come across articles recommending an array of different cleansers for a single night, but when it comes to cleansing ingredients, quality should always go over quantity. After all, a skincare regimen requires various products, which is why it’s best to avoid overdoing it.

Properly using a gentle cleanser is a great way to get deep down into the pores without irritating the skin. If you’d prefer a naturally delicate cleanser, StyleCraze notes that cold milk can be used to effectively wash your face. And by mixing five tablespoons of cold milk with a dash of salt, you can softly exfoliate your skin in the process.

Step 2: Spread Some Toner

After washing, you can ensure that your skin is pollutant-free by applying some toner. A toner is a liquid solution designed to help wipe away any speck of dirt left on your skin, with quick penetrating properties that can get rid of the dead cells on your skin’s surface while restoring your its pH balance as well.

However, before you take out your cotton pad, look for toners that can help you moisturize and calm your skin after washing, such as aloe vera or hyaluronic acid. Pretty Me’s beauty writer Sheena Dizon points out that aloe vera is packed with soothing properties, as it helps lessen the presence of redness and inflammation. It also helps you combat pimples. Meanwhile, hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that makes your skin supple and more hydrated.

Step 3: Use Serums

The best time to attend to issues like acne, fine lines, and dark spots is during the night, as the most potent ingredients for these skin-related problems aren’t that effective when they’re exposed to sunlight. In this regard, serums are composed of small molecules that swiftly send the active ingredients into your skin.

Skincare writer Amanda Montell writes on Byrdie that essential oils are excellent additions to any routine, pointing to rosehip oil for puffy eye bags and wrinkles, and jojoba oil for redness and aging. You can produce your own serums at home by combining 20 drops of the essential oil of your choice with 2 ounces of carrier oil.

Step 4: Apply Moisturizer

The last, but definitely not the least, step in your night skincare routine is to thoroughly moisturize your skin. In contrast to your morning moisturizers, a nighttime routine would require a richer mixture to help your skin stay hydrated in the morning.

As previously written on our “The Perfect Facial Care Routine” post, a high-quality moisturizer can shield sensitive skin and smoothen its texture. Moreover, shea butter is a magical moisturizing ingredient, as its natural vitamins and fatty acids are known to increase the moisture levels. This, in turn, can make anyone exude a radiant glow.
